A tornado is a spinning column of air that reaches from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes can be very dangerous with winds up to 300 miles per hour. They can destroy buildings and flip cars. Most tornadoes happen in the spring and early summer in an area called "Tornado Alley," which includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.
Weather scientists called meteorologists use special radar to track storms that might form tornadoes. When a tornado is spotted, they issue a tornado warning. If you hear a tornado warning, you should go to the lowest floor of your building, away from windows. The best place is a basement or an interior bathroom. Staying informed and having a safety plan can save lives during tornado season.
