Florida Cold Reads is designed to help your child improve their reading skills at home. Here's everything you need to know to support your child's reading practice:
Your child selects their grade level (2nd through 5th) and chooses from 5 practice passages. Each passage includes comprehension questions that align with Florida B.E.S.T. Standards.
Each passage takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. We recommend practicing 2-3 times per week for best results. Consistency is more important than duration!
Encourage your child to read the passage carefully before answering questions. Remind them to look back at the text for evidence. Be patient and celebrate their progress!
Each grade level has passages appropriate for that age. Questions test comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills your child is learning in school.
All passages and questions are designed to align with Florida's Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards. This means your child is practicing skills that directly support what they're learning in school, including:
Focuses on basic comprehension, identifying story elements, and understanding simple vocabulary.
Builds on comprehension skills, introduces more complex vocabulary, and begins critical thinking.
Emphasizes deeper analysis, theme identification, and more sophisticated comprehension questions.
Focuses on advanced comprehension, complex vocabulary, and analytical thinking skills.
